Bromsgrove U21's 11 - German U21 academy 7
The BB's players had also travelled in their own respect from their current Universities around the country to play this game - some travelling from as far a field as Brighton, Portsmouth, London, Nottingham, Sheffield, Cardiff and Swansea to name a few - JUST TO PLAY THE GAME.
The game was a tight match with the BB's under pressure from a larger better drilled side, which is not surprising; however there was an indomitable spirit to this newly formed side, who took their chances and defended courageously.
One could say in a number of instances - their body on the line and one such player Jack Brain (Hartpury) gaining himself a yellow card for living on the line, and also Man of the Match for his endeavours.
The score line was opened up mid way through the first half by a penalty form Gareth Davies (Worcester University), shortly followed by a converted try by the visitors. The score remained at 7 points to 3 to the visitors at half time.
In the second half the game went to a throw in the mud and rain, until the BB's moved the ball wide and with a grub kick through Sam Kirby (Sheffield University) dotted it down, unfortunately not converted. For the next stage of the game the German side put on a lot of pressure but was repelled by some astute kicking form Matt King(Nottingham Trent) pushing them back into their 22. their followed a short period of pressure where the BB's were awarded a penalty which was successfully converted again by Gareth Davies. The score remained at that for the remainder of match, with some terrific defence from the BB's. The BB`s went close to scoring when Chris Danks (Nottingham Trent) pressured the German full back from a long kick but the try was disallowed.
From the game stats the BB`s should have been beaten as we lost 50% of our prime possession, goes to show what a bit of spirit can do. Well done to the lads that were available for the first game and the BB's first win, what are you going to achieve when you play a bit more together.
Also our thanks must go to the visiting side for enabling this game to take place; we will hopefully see them again in the future.
Thanks also to the supporters and Staff at BRFC for making the event a success.
