A good size crowd watched what may come to be considered one of the greatest comeback victories in recent years of junior rugby at Finstall Park on Sunday, In their first league match this season Bromsgrove under 17’s came back from a 0-19 deficit to beat local rivals Dudley Kingswinford (DK) 32-29.
The first 15 minutes of the match were dominated by DK who used their pace on both wings to score 3 tries (2 converted) and establish what seemed like an unbeatable lead. Bromsgrove’s heads however did not drop and they fought back with a penalty and two first-half tries scored by James Davies and Adam Masters, both converted by Luke Cowley-Wright. DK then scored a penalty to establish a 5 point lead at half time, score 17-22
The Bromsgrove fight back continued in the 2nd half with a try by Joe Wilkinson who ran 60 yards to touch down and then Matt Shephard ran in to give Brosmgrove a 7 point lead 29-22. DK then piled on the pressure and scored a converted try to level the scores 29-29.
With only seconds to go and in their own half, Bromsgrove won a penalty and indiscipline by DK had the referee penalise them 10 metres twice to bring the play back to the half way line. Matt Shephard kicked for touch and from the resulting line-out Bromsgrove won another penalty which Luke Cowley-Wright cooly slotted over just before the ref blew time.
Final score Bromsgrove 32, Dudley Kingswinford 29.
